Tuition

USJ charges tuition per ECTS credit. Rates are the same for Lebanese and international students. The figures below come from the official tarifs.pdf published by the university (header: "à titre indicatif — tarif de l'année 2017-2018"). USJ has not published a newer plain-text rate sheet, so these figures are indicative; current rates may have been adjusted post-crisis. Verify with admissions before relying on these numbers.

A full academic year is 60 ECTS. The "year" column below is 60 × per-credit rate; the "full program" column is the total over the diploma's expected duration.

Architecture (ESAR), launched after the published tariff, is not listed in the official tarifs.pdf. Contact ESAR or admissions for current rates.

The 2017-2018 tariff also lists program durations as 3-year Licences for Psychomotor Therapy (IPM), Occupational Therapy (IET), and Lebanese Law (FDSP). USJ's current public catalogue describes IPM and IET as 4-year Bachelors and FDSP as a 3-year Licence with follow-on Master, so program structures may have evolved since the tariff was published.

Requirements

SAT

USJ does not require SAT scores for admission. Admission is based on the Lebanese Baccalaureate (or equivalent), an interview, and USJ's internal language aptitude tests (TALF + English Aptitude Test).

High-school grades

  • A recognized secondary school certificate is required: Lebanese Baccalaureate II (any strand), French Baccalauréat, IB Diploma, A-Levels, US High School Diploma, or another credential recognized by the Lebanese Ministry of Education.
  • An equivalence from the Lebanese Ministry of Education is required for non-Lebanese curricula.
  • Selective faculties (FM, FMD, FP, ESIB, INCI) require additional entrance examinations specific to the program.

Education system

USJ uses the European LMD / ECTS system (the standard French-Bologna model), which differs from the American credit-based system used by most other Lebanese universities — AUB, LAU, BAU, LIU, AUST, NDU, USEK, RHU, UoB, and others. Knowing which system a school uses changes how credits, durations, and tuition compare.

American credit-based system (AUB, LAU, BAU, LIU, …)

  • Each course is worth 1–6 credits (also called "credit hours"); a credit roughly maps to one classroom contact hour per week per semester.
  • A typical Bachelor of Arts / Science runs 90–120 credits across 3–4 years (Lebanese American-system schools usually run a 3-year/99-credit Licence-equivalent thanks to summer terms; AUB and LAU run a 4-year/120-credit US-style track).
  • Engineering BS programs are heavier: 108–150 credits over 4–5 years.
  • Tuition is normally charged per credit, and credits are designed to transfer easily to other American-system universities.

French LMD / ECTS system (USJ)

LMD = Licence – Master – Doctorat, the three-cycle Bologna degree structure:

CycleDurationECTS creditsAmerican equivalent
Licence3 years180 ECTSBachelor's degree
Master2 years120 ECTSMaster's degree
Doctorat3+ yearsno fixed totalPhD

ECTS = European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System. One ECTS credit ≈ 25–30 hours of total student work (lectures + tutorials + homework + exams + independent reading). A full academic year is 60 ECTS, regardless of subject. ECTS credits are recognised across the European Higher Education Area and most international partner institutions.

Professional first-degrees at USJ sit outside the standard 3-year Licence and follow longer integrated tracks:

DegreeFacultyDurationECTS
MD (Doctor of Medicine)FM7 years360 ECTS
DDS (Dental Surgery)FMD5 years300 ECTS
PharmD (Doctor of Pharmacy)FP5 years360 ECTS
Ing. (Diplôme d'Ingénieur)ESIB, ESIA, ESIAM5 years300 ECTS
BArch (Architecture)ESAR5 years342 ECTS

Rough conversion: ECTS ↔ American credits

ECTS counts total student workload (contact + independent study); American credits count weekly contact hours. They aren't 1:1, but a useful rule of thumb is 2 ECTS ≈ 1 American credit hour:

French (ECTS)≈ American (credit hours)Typical program
180 ECTS (3 yr Licence)~90 creditsLiberal arts BA / BS
240 ECTS (4 yr health Bachelor)~120 creditsPhysiotherapy, Speech-Language, etc.
300 ECTS (5 yr Ingénieur / DDS)~150 creditsEngineering, Dental Surgery
360 ECTS (7 yr MD / 5 yr PharmD)~180 creditsMedicine, Pharmacy
